Ronald Ellis, MD, PhD, FANA (SIG Oral Presenter)

Dr. Ronald Ellis is a physician-scientist whose laboratory and clinical work seeks to delineate how pathological interactions between the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its human host result in nervous system diseases such as dementia and peripheral neuropathy. His research program addresses topics such as HIV neurocognitive disorders, CNS effects of antiretroviral therapy, viral compartmentalization in plasma and CSF, and ARV pharmacology in the CNS. Dr. Ellis earned his medical degree and PhD from Boston University School of Medicine and interned at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He completed his residency and fellowship at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He is a co-principal investigator of the NIMH-funded P03 HIV Neurobehavioral Research Programs (HNRP) and director of its Neuromedical Core. He is also co-PI of the multicenter CNS HIV Antiretroviral Therapy Effects Research (CHARTER) study. He contributes nationally and internationally to neuroHIV research, for example, previously serving as Chair of the Neurology Collaborative Science Group of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG).
