Laurie Gutmann, MD, FANA

Dr. Laurie Gutmann is Professor and Chair of Neurology and Co-Director of the Neuroscience Institute at Indiana University School of Medicine. She received her BA from Oberlin College, her MD from West Virginia University, and neurology residency and fellowship in EMG and neuromuscular diseases at the University of Virginia. She is co-PI of the annual NINDS funded Clinical Trials Methodology Course, working with clinical researchers designing their first clinical trials. She is co-chair of the NIH/NHLBI RECOVER-Clinical Trials Steering Committee for post-acute sequelae of COVID. She is a part of the Clinical Coordinating Center for the NeuroNEXT (NIH Network of Excellence for Neurologic Clinical Trials) in charge of site support, recruitment/retention, and diversity in clinical trials. Her research focus has been in clinical studies of neuromuscular disorders, rare diseases, and acute stroke trials. Previously, she was Professor of Neurology at West Virginia University, serving as Neurology Residency Program Director and Stroke Director of their comprehensive stroke center, and Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Research at the University of Iowa. She worked for four years as a Program Officer in the NINDS/NIH Extramural Office of Clinical Research. She served as a Director for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and was a member and chair of the ACGME Neurology RC. She is a Fellow in both the ANA and the AAN and serves as chair of the ANA awards committee.
