Laurie Gutmann, MD, FANA

Dr. Laurie Gutmann is Professor and Chair of Neurology and Co-Director of the Neuroscience Institute at Indiana University School of Medicine. She received her BA from Oberlin College and her MD from West Virginia University, followed by a neurology residency and fellowship in EMG and neuromuscular diseases at the University of Virginia.
She is Co-Principal Investigator of the annual NINDS-funded Clinical Trials Methodology Course, working with clinical researchers designing their first clinical trials. Dr. Gutmann also serves as Co-Chair of the NIH/NHLBI RECOVER Clinical Trials Steering Committee for post-acute sequelae of COVID and is part of the Clinical Coordinating Center for NeuroNEXT (NIH Network of Excellence for Neurologic Clinical Trials), where she oversees site support, recruitment and retention, and diversity in clinical trials.
Her research focuses on clinical studies of neuromuscular disorders, rare diseases, and acute stroke trials. Previously, she was Professor of Neurology at West Virginia University, where she served as Neurology Residency Program Director and Stroke Director of the comprehensive stroke center. She also served as Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Research at the University of Iowa and worked for four years as a Program Officer in the NINDS/NIH Extramural Office of Clinical Research.
Dr. Gutmann has served as a Director for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and as a member and Chair of the ACGME Neurology Residency Review Committee. She is a Fellow of both the American Neurological Association (ANA) and the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and currently serves as Chair of the ANA Awards Committee.
