Andrew Sas, MD, PhD (SIG Oral Presenter)

Ohio State University
Dr. Andrew Sas is an Assistant Professor at Ohio State University. Dr. Sas is a clinician scientist who splits his time between translational research and clinical care in the field of traumatic brain injury. He completed his MD and PhD at the Medical University of South Carolina and then went to the University of Michigan to complete his residency in Neurology where he served as chief resident in his final year. Dr. Sasā lab studies myeloid cell inflammatory responses to traumatic injury of the central nervous system. The goal of this research is to understand the mechanistic signals that drive myeloid immune responses towards alternative polarization states that can shift the inflammatory response towards neuroprotection and regeneration after neuronal injury. Dr. Sas has focused on the role of neutrophils as first responders to neuronal injury and has identified subsets of neutrophils that have the ability to drive axon regeneration after injury. This work has resulted in publications in Nature Immunology and Nature Neuroscience. The goal of his research is to develop immunomodulatory therapies to improve recovery after acute neurological injury. This work is generously funded by NIH R01 and the Wings for Life Foundation.
