Michelle C. Johansen, MD, PhD

Johns Hopkins University
Dr. Michelle C. Johansen is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She currently serves as associate faculty for the Welch Center at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Johansen’s research and clinical interests focus on stroke etiology and vascular contributions to cognitive decline. She studies the intersection between the brain and the heart, specifically how changes in the heart’s structure and function point toward the cause of stroke and impact brain health, including cognition. Her lab has been involved with several large epidemiologic cohort studies (i.e., ARIC, DISCOVERY, GeneSTAR, BP-COG), and is using blood-based biomarkers and advanced cardiac and brain imaging to diagnose the cause of patient’s strokes and determine the impact of cardiac changes on a patient’s cognition over time.
