Angela Hays Shapshak, MD

Dr. Angela Hays Shapshak is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Anesthesiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where she directs the Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program and serves as Associate Director of the Neurology Residency Program. With over 15 years of experience in graduate medical education, Dr. Hays Shapshak has held leadership roles at both local and national levels. She has chaired the Fellowship Directors’ Section of the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS) and was the founding chair of the NCS Accreditation, Certification, and Training Committee (ACT). Her work on medical education in neurocritical care resulted in an appointment to the ACGME Neurocritical Care Milestones Task Force and two terms on the Board of Directors of the United Council of Neurological Subspecialties. Additionally, she serves on the Neurocritical Care and Trauma Advisory Council for the Society for Neurological Surgeons’ Committee on Advanced Subspecialty Training, and on the Neuroscience Steering Committee of the Society for Critical Care Medicine, where she co-chairs the Education Subcommittee. Dr. Hays Shapshak’s research focuses on intracranial hemorrhage, disorders of consciousness, and neurological outcomes following critical illness.
